Guide to Campervan Conversion and Safety Standards
At CCCAMPERS, your safety always comes first. Every campervan we build is crafted with care, tested for reliability, and designed for adventures that feel as safe as they do exciting.
Why Safety Standards Matter
A great campervan should be more than just comfortable — it should be built to protect you. That’s why we follow strict British and European standards for crash safety, gas, electrical, and fire protection. When you travel in a CCCAMPERS conversion, you’re driving a vehicle that’s been built and checked to the highest standards of quality and safety.
The DVLA and Campervan Registration
At the moment, the DVLA is unlikely to register a pre-registered van as a motor caravan — even if it’s been fully converted to meet or exceed all the correct safety standards. Unfortunately, the current system depends too heavily on photographs and administrative judgement rather than genuine engineering knowledge. In other words, an office administrator decides whether a conversion is “safe” or not.
To us, that approach is simply bonkers. True safety should be based on expert inspection, engineering design, and certified testing — not a handful of photos and a tick-box review.
That said, the DVLA will usually register these vehicles as vans with windows. The good news is that this still allows you to insure your campervan and drive at the higher speed limits permitted for motor caravans.
We sincerely hope the DVLA will soon recognise pre-registered campervans using the same professional documentation we already supply for new builds, including:
✅ A Gas Safety Certificate
✅ An Electrical Installation Certificate
✅ A Habitation Safety Report
✅ And a Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) Individual Approval Certificate (IVA) — just as we do for all our brand new built campervans.
These certifications prove that our campers meet genuine, measurable safety standards — not assumptions.
Built to Type Approval Standards — Every Time
Whether we’re building a brand-new unregistered campervan or converting your own personal van, CCCAMPERS will always build it to the same high level — as though it’s going for full Type Approval testing.
We make sure every conversion is engineered, installed, and finished to meet or exceed the current safety standards at the time of build.
That way, when the DVLA eventually updates its process and allows pre-registered vans to go through the same in-depth approval procedure, your CCCAMPERS conversion will already be fully prepared and ready to pass.
VCA Approved for Your Peace of Mind
The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), part of the Department for Transport, tests and approves vehicles across the UK to ensure they’re safe, strong, and roadworthy.
Our campervans undergo independent inspections and crash tested quipment, proving that every layout we build is safe both on the move and when you’re parked up for the night.
That means you can enjoy your adventures knowing your van meets official government safety standards.
VCA approval also means:
✅ Correct DVLA classification as a Motor Caravan on brand-new, unregistered vans
✅ Lower insurance premiums
✅ Better resale value
✅ Legal motorway speeds up to 70mph
✅ Complete peace of mind
NCC Approval – The Mark of Quality
We’re also proud to hold NCC (National Caravan Council) Workshop Approval — the UK’s trusted certification for Leisure Vehicles, including day vans, campervans, motorhomes, and caravans.
This means our workshop is independently inspected, with strict safety and quality checks carried out in our workshops to ensure every camper we build is up to standard.
Why Choose an Approved Converter?
Buying from an approved converter like CCCAMPERS isn’t just about getting a stylish van — it’s about knowing it’s built right, tested properly, and safe for every journey.
Whether we’re converting your own van or crafting a brand-new one, we’ll always hold ourselves to the same high standards — because your safety and peace of mind will always come first.
